Nearly half of the Americans endorsed in a 2018 survey the concept of a Universal basic income program–where did that concept come from? The idea of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been around for centuries. Way back in 1516, Thomas More’s “Utopia” philosophizes on the benefits of a minimum income, Thomas Paine wrote of a basic endowment for all adults over the age of 21 in 1796, and in 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. named guaranteed income as the final solution to poverty. Today, many calls for UBI with the new rising threat of a new industrial revolution: automation. But in order to make this idea work some essential precepts must be met.
